Is Endurance in Sport Physical or Mental?

When we consider great races such as the marathon and triathlon, the word “endurance” is always linked. And this is because it simply is not possible for the athletes to complete at the race unless they have the endurance to do so. This endurance can either be in physical form or mental. When you enter a marathon, you do so knowing that you will have to achieve the required physical levels of performance. Therefore, very few marathon runners are not physically prepared for what lies ahead. But what is sometimes overlooked is the mental strength required to compete in such a race, and it is just as important that your mind is prepared as well as your body. Here are some tips that will help build your mental strength and endurance.

Always Think Positively

Be confident in what you are trying to achieve and have plenty of confidence in yourself. Many super fit athletes sometimes fail as they lose their self-confidence. You can build up your confidence just the same as you can build your muscles. Train your mind to constantly think positive thoughts, and ignore negative ones. Listen to what your mind is telling you and block out any negative doubts that you may have.

Visualize

Trying to defeat stress, many doctors cite using visualization. For instance, when you are feeling that everything is getting on top of you think about somewhere remote and calm and spend a couple of minutes there. A runner might visualize the finishing line, perhaps a basketball player thinks of a free throw. It does not matter what imagery you conjure up as long as it benefits your attitude. Go back and remind yourself of past successes that prove you are an achiever.

Always Plan for Setbacks

No matter how good an athlete you are, there will always be setbacks, and it is how you deal with these setbacks and what you do next is the most important factor. Perhaps you miss an easy shot in golf, the golfer who can eradicate this from his mind and think of his next tee shot will win out. Again, you can train your mind to stop and reboot itself, there are techniques that you can practice to learn this. Always have a plan in place what to do when the pressure mounts.

Cope with Stress

Stress can be an athlete’s biggest nemesis; it can defeat you before you even start a race. Meditation can really help to calm you down and let you focus on your body. Some sports psychologists suggest not all stress is bad, and that you can channel it to be positive stress. They class excitement as positive stress although that is debatable, but it does have the same physical attributes to anxiety. Your breathing quickens and your heart rate increases. Experiencing excitement before a race is not a bad thing but when it tips over into almost panic then it has gone too far. Most of these tips will help you boost your mental endurance and together with physical fitness you should be able to tackle even the most grueling of races.
